E85 / Biofuels

With the emergence of ‘bio’ fuels throughout the world, we are frequently asked about the benefits of using the various formulas of Dyno-tab® in these fuels.  Dyno-tab® is safe to use with E85 fuel and can help restore two of the functions that are reduced in biofuels:  power and economy. 

By definition, E-85 is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petroleum based hydrocarbon material. 

Biofuels are produced from various sources.  In Asia, palm oil is the primary source.  In the United States, it’s corn.  In the Caribbean a non-edible grape seed is used as the source material to get ethanol.

As it does with the 100% petroleum based gasoline, Dyno-tab® in E-85 will smooth the burn sequence in the combustion chamber and work to retard the formation of hard or soft carbon deposits on the piston, the sparkplugs and in the fire dome. 

As a general rule, biofuels deliver less power and economy than petroleum based fuels.  Adding Dyno-tab® to E85 will increase octane, but the increase is unpredictable when there is a high percentage of non-petroleum component within the fuel. Dyno-tab® will also increase power.  Most people are surprised to learn that biofuels have 15 to 20 percent less BTU’s than petroleum based (hydrocarbon) fuels. A lower BTU means less power and economy.

Dyno-tab® will not dissolve as quickly in an E-85, but within two hours of running time it should be fully dissolved and entrained in the fuel itself.  Once entrained in the fuel, it will not fall out of suspension under any circumstances.
